100% on Rotten Tomatoes

Roman Vishniac was difficult and flamboyant, a shameless self-promoter, and a master of reinvention.

He was also one of the groundbreaking photographers of the 20th century.

Produced by Nancy Spielberg and Roberta Grossman, the film follows the artist from his early years in tsarist Russia to the cosmopolitan streets of pre-war Berlin, to the shtetls in Poland and Lithuania, and the Princeton offices of Albert Einstein. Roman Vishniac is best known for his iconic images of life in Eastern Europe from 1935 through 1938. Few predicted that less than a decade later, these communities would be wiped out, and Vishniac’s photographs would provide the last visual records of an entire world.

After the war, in a stunning shift, Vishniac turned almost exclusively to scientific photography, where he made considerable contributions in the field of microscopy.

The film is narrated by Vishniac’s daughter, Mara. Growing up in her father’s shadow, Mara sought to break free of his grip, only to come around and embrace his legacy.

This captivating film weaves together many of Vishniac’s 30,000 images and beautifully realized reenactments to bring to life Vishniac’s dramatic story and his bigger-than-life personality.
