THE AUTOMAT tells the 100-year story of the iconic restaurant chain Horn & Hardart. Inspired by a visit to Europe in the early 1900s, Frank Hardart set out to create a “waiterless” restaurant. With partner Joseph Horn, they built a small chain of technologically innovative cafeterias into a restaurant empire serving good, wholesome food to generations of New Yorkers and Philadelphians. From the perspective of former customers like Mel Brooks and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, we watch a business climb to its peak success and then grapple with fast food in a forever changed America.  This winning film will put a smile on your face as you’re transported back to the good old days of nickel coffee, savory meatloaf, tapioca pudding, and lemon meringue pie.
