In Europe during the Middle Ages Christian women covered their hair. During the 16th and 17th centuries wigs were worn by royalty, and associated with high status and high fashion. In the 60s and 70s the wig enjoyed a revival thanks in part to a large fashionista market.

Filmed in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Canada and Jerusalem, Sheiteltraces the historical and spiritual roots of hair covering for married women in Judaism, its evolving interpretations, and its misconceptions. Scenes from Jerusalem reveal how head coverings act as markers of faith and empowerment not only for Jewish, but Christian and Muslim women as well. Additionally, the film offers a rare look into the global wig industry.
