The Jewish People have a great deal of experience with wandering, and Congregation Beth Shalom is no exception. Forty years ago, the genesis of a Conservative Jewish congregation had its humble beginnings in the Santa Clarita Valley, on the northern-most edge of Los Angeles County. The first steps of our journey began with thirty-three determined families in the basement of a Newhall nursing home. The seeds these pioneers planted have taken root and flourished, growing into the CBS we have built today: a vibrant, egalitarian Spiritual Center that serves our ever-expanding Jewish community.
At Congregation Beth Shalom, our mission is to celebrate our Jewish identity and promote meaningful connections to everyday life through ritual and spirituality, education for all ages, mitzvot and tikkun olam. We are proud of our Jewish heritage and strive to provide traditional and innovative activities to inspire development of relationships with each other and with God.

Rabbi Jay Siegel has envisioned being of service to the community since his calling to the rabbinate. Working to ensure his vision Rabbi Siegel received his B.A. in History from the University of Minnesota, and upon Rabbinic ordination received a M.A. in rabbinics from the American Jewish University. Rabbi Jay was Associate Rabbi at Beit T’Shuvah for several years until he finished his position there to return to school at the American Jewish University earning a Masters in Nonprofit Management.
Working as a part time rabbi for a small synagogue, Rabbi Siegel pursued his interest in nonprofit organizations through working at The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, where he impacted Jewish life through development of the community through fundraising and community building efforts.
Rabbi Siegel is passionate about developing Jewish community and helping others in their spiritual journeys. Inspiring others to the depth and breadth of the Jewish Tradition is at the core of Rabbi Siegel’s personal mission.
Most importantly, Rabbi Siegel enjoys spending quality time with his wife Leah and their family, Binyamin, Henny, Sari, Goldie, Isaac and Mima.
Rabbi Ronald Hauss, Retired has been a part of the spiritual life of Congregation Beth Shalom for more than four decades. Originally brought in to serve as High Holiday Cantor in 1973, Rabbi Hauss first became CBS’ full-time Rabbi in 1976.
His second act came in 1988 as our growing synagogue was making preparations to find a permanent home in Santa Clarita. And once again, in 2013, at a crucial point in the growth of CBS, Rabbi Hauss was called upon to return to a full-time religious and spiritual capacity.
After overseeing the CBS Religious School for 9 years, Rabbi Hauss is again a part of the resurgence and transformation of Congregation Beth Shalom. His continued involvement provides oversight in the CBS Religious School, bar and bat Mitzvah preparation, weekly Torah classes, and Adult Education Program.
CBS has entrusted Rabbi Hauss with the spiritual lives of our congregation and will continue to benefit from his wisdom.
Cantor Raymond Cohen has returned to Congregation Beth Shalom and we are pleased to have him be a part of our religious life. A long time collaborator of Rabbi Ron Hauss, Cantor Cohen brings with him not only a love of melody and Yiddishkeit, but also second and third generations of Cohanim.
With twin sons Rob and Phil, and their respective families, the Cohens are all actively involved members. Whether it’s the blowing of the Yom Kippur shofar or davening on Shabbat, they elevate our prayer and add a sense of “ruach” to the holidays.
We are blessed to have Cantor Cohen as part of CBS as the sounds of his voice fill our magnificent new main sanctuary. We look forward to a bright future of song.
Robin Ceppi is the central point of contact for all things CBS. As an active member, Robin has overseen our Scrip Program. Now, in her role as Synagogue Administrator, Robin has a hand in scheduling, logistics and as support for our clergy. Please reach out to Robin with questions, comments or to let her know how much she is appreciated!
Carol Bloom is the Director of the CBS Early Childhood Educational Center. For close to two decades Carol has guided her experienced team, overseeing Santa Clarita Valley’s only full-service Judaic Childhood Education Center. As a vital part of the preschool since its inception,Carol gets to know all of her students personally with her warm, friendly style.
Breena Prater has been a mainstay at CBS for over 25 years. Her contributions range from lay cantor, Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutor, Religious and Adult Education program teacher as well as being an active member of the CBS community. Her knowledge of prayer and liturgy has made her an invaluable part of CBS life. She has served on the Sisterhood Board and as a Trustee and will continue to play an important role going forward.
Five years ago the CBS Executive Board decided it was time to change the way our congregation viewed membership. Instead of “dues”, a new model was designed which would turn the conventional approach on its head. The decision was made to move to a Voluntary Pledge Program. Looking back, this revolutionary idea seemed fraught with risk.
As other temples had experienced, economic pressures put many congregants in a position of making the choice between re-joining or not. How could CBS provide the services and support our congregants relied upon without knowing we could afford to deliver? Could we continue to be the spiritual center of the Santa Clarita Valley?
The answer to both questions is yes, and more. This unique path to the benefits of membership is working at Congregation Beth Shalom. /span>.
